The Bells of the Eighties

An upcoming collection of roughly sixty poems, written in Assyrian, carrying the memories, sounds, and feelings of a decade — and an important milestone in my journey as a writer.

There are moments that keep ringing in you long after they've passed. A voice. A song. A doorway you can still walk through with your eyes closed. The Bells of the Eighties is my attempt to listen to those moments again — and to write them down before they fade.

Why "the Eighties"

The title is exactly what it sounds like: most of these poems were written in the 1980s. They are the bells of that decade — the sounds, feelings, and memories of those years, gathered now into a single collection and finally given a home.

Written in Assyrian

The Bells of the Eighties is written entirely in Assyrian — the heart of the whole project for me. To publish a full collection of poetry in Assyrian is, in itself, an act of preservation — and, I hope, an invitation to other Assyrian readers and writers to keep our language not only alive, but creating.

What the poems are about

Across roughly sixty to sixty-five poems, the collection explores the themes that have always drawn me in:

• Memory and nostalgia — the ache and beauty of looking back
• Identity — what it means to carry a heritage across time and distance
• Relationships — the people who shape us, stay with us, or slip away
• Culture — the traditions, language, and small rituals that make us who we are

With an introduction by Mr. Anwar Atto

I'm honoured that the collection opens with an introduction written by Mr. Anwar Atto — a thoughtful reflection that places these poems in their wider Assyrian literary context.

Sharokin Radio — The Voice of Assyria

An independent, community-built internet radio station giving Assyrian culture a living, modern home.

Every people deserves a place that sounds like home. For Assyrians — especially those of us who grew up between two worlds — that place has been hard to find. So I decided to build one.

Why I built it

So many of us are deeply proud to be Assyrian — but we don't always have a space that feels like ours. Sharokin Radio is my answer: a home for Assyrian youth, hosted in English so it feels like home to those raised outside the homeland — while the music remains one hundred percent Assyrian. And here's the part I'm proudest of: no corporation owns this. It's independent — built for the community, out of love for our people.

Honest about how it's made

I believe with my whole heart that music is meant to be made by real human hands. A grassroots station like ours leans on modern tools, including AI, only because professional production is expensive — and those tools let our music exist at all, honoring the phrasing and feeling of the Assyrian language. To be absolutely clear: this is not about replacing our artists — and it never will be. Ancient songs, new tools, same heart.

Akhiqar — The First Assyrian AI

A dream I have carried almost my whole life: to give technology a mind that can read, write, and think in Assyrian — so our language lives not only in our mouths, but in the future itself.

There is a quiet fear that lives in the heart of every small nation: that one day our language will become a museum piece — something studied, not spoken. I have spent my life refusing to let that happen to Assyrian. And now, through the most powerful storytelling tool humanity has ever built, I am building the first Assyrian LLM. Its name is Akhiqar.

Why "Akhiqar"

Long before there were computers, there was a keeper of wisdom named Akhiqar — the legendary Assyrian sage. His book of sayings was copied by hand and carried across the ancient world for more than two thousand years, simply because it was worth keeping. That is exactly what I want this project to do for our language — and so it carries his name.

Why this matters

The great languages of power are being poured into artificial intelligence. But ask today's most advanced AI to read a line of Assyrian, and it stumbles — it cannot reliably read our script, honor our grammar, or feel the weight of our words. In the digital world being built all around us, it is as if we do not exist. If our language is missing from the technology our children grow up inside, that technology quietly teaches them Assyrian is a language of the past. I cannot accept that.

The vision

Imagine a young Assyrian, born far from the homeland, who can ask a question and hear the answer — aloud — in the language of their grandparents. Imagine our poetry and prayers protected and alive inside the tools the whole world uses. Imagine a child learning to write their first Assyrian sentence with a patient teacher that never tires.

I am honest that this is, today, more a vision than a finished product. These are early days. But every great preservation begins with someone deciding the work is worth doing. An Assyrian AI is not meant to speak for us — it is meant to make sure that when the world speaks, our voice is in the room.

In Every Language

For years my songs lived in the languages of my heart — Assyrian, and once, as a boy, Arabic. Now I am giving them new life in English, so that more hearts around the world can feel what they have always been trying to say.

Music was my first language before I had the words for it. And for most of my life, the songs I wrote lived in Assyrian — because that is the language my heart sings in. But a song wants to be understood. So I began giving my songs new life in other languages — starting with English, and now Turkish, with French on the way. Same melodies, same soul, new words that open the door a little wider.

Why these live here, and not on Sharokin Radio

On Sharokin Radio I made a promise I intend to keep: the music there is one hundred percent Assyrian. These recordings are something different — a bridge outward — so they belong here, on my own site, without ever touching the promise Sharokin stands for.

Why I'm doing this

It comes back to the belief that runs through everything I make: that humanity is one shared family. A song in Assyrian is a gift to my people. The same song in English, in French, in Turkish, is that gift handed across the table to everyone else — come, sit, listen, this is who we are. Thank you for listening. It means more than you know. ❤️
